Five Minute Friday: Mommy, Tell Me a Story

Five Minute Friday

There are seasons that we all go through. Some seem long and arduous. Some are just way too short, like you want so bad to capture each moment in your mind and on camera forever. My children often give me grief about this, but then I remind them that they don’t stay small for very long.

My season is in a story-telling season.  Every night, as I tuck my youngest child into bed after prayers, he says to me, “Mommy, tell me a story.”

I stretch out next to him and sigh a sound that probably sounds annoyed because its close to my quiet time, but I remember that my child doesn’t stay a child for so long. Pretty soon he won’t want me to lay in bed and tell him about my childhood pets, silly antidotes from his uncles, or the time I fell out of a tree.

As he snuggles up to me, and I breathe in his sweet-smelling head, I whisper, “What would you like to hear?”  We then dive into my childhood memories and giggle when I am done.

Psalm 127:3 NIV  Children are a heritage from the Lordoffspring a reward from him.

3 John 1:4 ESV

I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.

I think there are a few different camps of parenting out there, and I fall into the camp that says, “Baby boy, please stay little. The world is a scary place and I want you under my wing forever.”

I then remember that one day, he will tuck his little child into bed and tell them about the times his mom would do the same with him, my silly antidotes, stories about our pets, and the time his sister jumped out of a tree. I am creating a legacy by living in my season of story-telling.

Psalm 78: 4 ESV

We will not hide them from their children, but tell to the coming generation the glorious deeds of the Lord, and his might, and the wonders that he has done.

  1. Yes, this is such a great reminder, I need to remember that the days of them asking me to tell them stories is very short. My oldest is 8 already, and I wonder where the time went. I hope you have a lovely weekend!

  2. What sweet moments you are creating with him. He will always remember this time and you are passing along your history and he will pass it along to his children as he shares his memories of you. I’m in your camp too…stay little.

  3. I say, keep telling stories to your kids all their lives. We don’t always have the opportunities to lay beside them in bed, but you can always fill them with stories of your life. I believe that as we share those things, it connects them to a history that is greater than themselves… a tether that will anchor them to people, places and things that are larger than their small worlds. So tell stories… at night… at dinner… in the car… whenver you can. you don’t ever get to old for it. I have 4 grown children and I still like to hear my mom tell stories of her life as a child.

    1. Just the other day my mom reminded me of something that happened when I was as a child that we use to laugh about for years. She told me I should tell it to my children. That led me to a great bedtime story not just for the little guy but even for my older children. We all laughed and joked. Now the girls ask for stories as well.
